Repairing an Amaran 200XS LED Light: A Real World Fix for Filmmakers

Lighting is one of the most important tools in any video production setup, and when a key light fails, it can disrupt your entire workflow. In this project, I took on the challenge of repairing a heavily used Amaran 200XS that had suffered multiple drops and physical damage over time.

The Problem

After years of use, the light had structural damage across its body, but the main issue was a faulty DC input XLR port. This made powering the unit unreliable and frustrating during shoots. Instead of replacing the entire light, I decided to repair it and document the process.

The Repair Process

The repair involved a full disassembly of the unit. Using a T10 bit, I carefully removed all screws and components, making sure to keep everything organised. The damaged housing parts were replaced with new top and back covers sourced online.

The most critical step was replacing the DC IN XLR adapter. This required desoldering the damaged port and installing a new one, making sure each wire was correctly matched to its corresponding pin.

During the process, I also removed old glue from previous repairs, handled delicate internal components like the WiFi antenna, and transferred the front glass panel to the new housing.

Challenges Along the Way

Like most real world repairs, things did not go perfectly. At one point, a flexible flat cable was accidentally damaged during soldering and had to be replaced. This highlighted how delicate internal electronics can be and the importance of working carefully, especially around heat sensitive components.

Reassembly and Testing

Once all components were repaired or replaced, the light was reassembled step by step. After tightening everything and reconnecting the internal parts, the moment of truth arrived.

The light powered on successfully, the screen worked, and all controls responded as expected. The result was a fully functional and much better looking light.

Final Thoughts

Repairing gear like the Amaran 200XS is not always straightforward, but it can be incredibly rewarding. Not only does it save money, it also extends the life of professional equipment.

For videographers and content creators, understanding your gear at this level can be a huge advantage. Even if you do not plan to repair equipment yourself, knowing what goes on inside helps you troubleshoot problems faster on set.

If you are working in video production and rely on lights like this, it is worth considering repair as an option before replacement.
